Success Story - Coaching for Leaders and Life

Client:  Mike-Senior Executive, Federal Government

Primary focus: Mike came to Bette George for Leadership and Life coaching because he wanted to develop a level of personal mastery that would enable him to survive in a work situation that did not place value on his collaborative, empowering leadership style. He desperately wanted to find a new position where his views, values and accomplishments would be valued. He was keenly aware that to strengthen his leadership capacity he must become more self-aware, be open to new possibilities and willing to try new ways of thinking and acting.

Goals:  1) To make his vision for his division clear to colleagues, subordinates and customers; 2) To be viewed by others as a collaborator and partner who builds relationships that support desired results; 3) To coach and lead his direct reports to develop their strengths and to mentor them in developing their subordinates.

Results:  With Mike’s visionary leadership guiding the way, the division became known for collaborative teamwork and superior customer service.  These were people who had been labeled as poor performers, difficult to work with and manage.  Mike provided leadership coaching for his direct reports and with his coach, learned to support and mentor them.  He became adept at communicating his expectations, holding staff accountable, and inspiring commitment.  When he left the organization for a challenging new position with another agency, he did so with pride in his achievements-achievements that had been attained under difficult circumstances.

“As my executive coach, Bette has had a profound impact on my abilities as a leader.  She has provided me with a comprehensive set of tools that has allowed me to be aware of my behaviors in the moment and make modifications that result in continuous improvement.  Her focus on building interpersonal skills has helped me to strengthen relationships.  I am able to give and receive feedback as a gift.  When I hear my staff call me ‘Best Boss,’ I know that my ability to be authentic and stay true to my values has made me an extremely effective leader.”
